Senior Research Associate Michaela Gulemetova and Research Analyst Elnaz Safarha will participate in the group panel “Lisez-vous Français? Early Grade Reading in Francophone Africa: A multi-country comparison of assessment tools, data, and program design” on March 9 from 3:00-4:30 PM at the Sheraton Atlanta, 1, Capitol Center (North Tower). IMPAQ is organizing the session with AVSI Ivory Coast, Catholic Relief Services Mali, Catholic Relief Services Burkina Faso, and the US Department of Agriculture.

During the presentation, panelists will:

  • Present how to measure reading outcomes using an innovative, low cost, and easy to implement early grade reading assessment tool ASER (Annual Status of Education Report) in order to rigorously estimate literacy programs impact,
  • Compare and contrast the ASER reading baseline findings across countries and learn how different program activities were designed given each country social, cultural, economic, and political contexts in order to meet their goals in reading improvements, and
  • Create a platform for participating program implementers, evaluators, and funders, to share experiences and lessons learned to help guide improvements in literacy programming.
