IMPAQ evaluated the spread of TeamSTEPPS (Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety) through the TeamSTEPPS 2.0 Online Master Trainer Course. This program develops TeamSTEPPS Master Trainers who then implement the TeamSTEPPS tools and strategies in their organizations.

The IMPAQ evaluation tracked participants over time and used a multi-level approach that aligns with the Kirkpatrick model of training program evaluations. We collected data on participants’ teamwork attitudes and knowledge pre-training and then again immediately after training. We also collected data on participants’ reactions to the program, through an evaluation form that assesses the extent to which they liked the course and their intent to use what they learned. Six months later, we assessed the same participants, to determine if and how they have implemented TeamSTEPPS, and we collect:

  • The number of facilities and individuals they trained;
  • The tools and strategies they implemented and where they were implemented; and
  • The perceived outcomes of implementing TeamSTEPPS.

In addition, we continued to be involved in the evaluation of a number of other TeamSTEPPS efforts, including the National Implementation of TeamSTEPPS program and the TeamSTEPPS for Office-Based Care program.

Those involved in this project understand the science of team training. The project's senior technical advisor has more than 10 years of experience with the TeamSTEPPS program. This includes leading the development of the original skill-based curriculum and the National Implementation program. In addition, the project team developed several of the measurement tools that are included in the TeamSTEPPS curriculum for individual users and used in the national program’s evaluation efforts.
