Over 20 million households receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits from the Federal government each month. This study examined point-of-sale (POS) food purchase data to determine what foods SNAP participants typically purchase and how these purchases compare to those made by non-SNAP households. By using POS data to compare the purchases of SNAP households to those of non-SNAP households, this study provided more detail on food expenditure patterns than previous studies.
